GRE AWA Scoring: How to Get a 6.0

Your essay is graded by both a human and an e-rater algorithm. Learn exactly what they are looking for and how to maximize your score.

1. The Grading Criteria

ETS graders evaluate your essay on four specific dimensions. You don't need perfect grammar to get a 6.0, but you do need perfect logic.

1. Complexity of Thought

Do you address the nuance? A 6.0 essay acknowledges counter-arguments and explores "grey areas" rather than just stating a simple "Yes".

2. Organization

Does the essay flow logically? Use transition words (However, Therefore, Furthermore) to guide the reader.

3. Evidence & Support

Are your examples persuasive? Hypothetical examples are allowed, but specific real-world examples (History, Science) are stronger.

4. Mechanics

Grammar and vocabulary. You can make minor errors, but they shouldn't interfere with meaning. Varied sentence structure boosts your score.
