The CAT Exam Pattern: A Test of Selection
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is not about speed; it is about accuracy under pressure. Understand the 2-hour format, the sectional time locks, and the unique marking scheme.
The 2-Hour Format (120 Mins)
Since 2020, CAT has standardized to a 2-hour window. The order of sections is FIXED. You cannot jump between sections.
| Section Order | Section Name | Questions (Est.)* | Time Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. VARC | Verbal Ability & Reading Comp | 24 | 40 Minutes |
| 2. DILR | Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning | 20 | 40 Minutes |
| 3. QA | Quantitative Ability | 22 | 40 Minutes |
| TOTAL | ~66 Questions | 66 | 120 Minutes |
*Note: The number of questions is not officially released beforehand but has remained stable at 66 for the last 3 years.
Difficulty Reality: Score vs. Percentile
CAT is an extremely high-difficulty exam. Unlike school exams, you do not need 90% marks to succeed. You only need ~50%.
Approx 43% Marks.
Gateway to IIM A, B, C.
Approx 30% Marks.
Top Tier New IIMs.
Approx 25% Marks.
Baby IIMs & Top MBA Colleges.
The Strategy: "The Art of Leaving"
To get a 99%ile, you only need to solve 14-15 questions correctly per section. That means you should actively SKIP almost 30-40% of the paper to save time and ensure accuracy.
Marking Scheme & Tools
CAT uses a unique marking system that rewards identifying "TITA" questions.
MCQ (Multiple Choice)
- Correct: +3 Marks
- Incorrect: -1 Mark
- Strategy: Do not guess blindly. The penalty is steep (33%).
TITA (Type In The Answer)
- Correct: +3 Marks
- Incorrect: 0 Marks (No Penalty)
- Strategy: Attempt ALL of these. There is literally no downside.
On-Screen Calculator
CAT provides a basic calculator, but there's a catch:
It is mouse-operated (no keyboard entry) and incredibly slow. Do not rely on it. Use mental math or approximation for Speed.
Section-by-Section Overview
VARC
The Heavy Reader's Section
- Reading Comp: 16 Qs (4 passages). Philosophical, abstract, and dense.
- Verbal Ability: 8 Qs. Para Jumbles, Odd One Out, Summary (Mostly TITA).
DILR
The "Game Changer" Section
- Format: 4 Sets of 5 Questions each.
- Difficulty: Very High. Solving just 2 sets (10 Qs) usually guarantees a 99%ile in this section.
QA
Arithmetic Dominated
- Arithmetic: ~8-10 Qs (Percentages, TSD, Time-Work).
- Algebra: ~6-8 Qs (Equations, Functions).
- Geometry/Modern: ~4-6 Qs.
