GMAT RC: Mantle Plumes vs. Plate Tectonics

For decades, the theory of plate tectonics stood as the unchallenged paradigm of geodynamics, explaining earthquakes, mountain building, and oceanic trenches through the drift of lithospheric plates. However , the paradigm struggles to account for localized hotspots of intraplate volcanism—such as the thermal anomalies that formed the Hawaiian island chain, which lie far from plate boundaries. To resolve this anomaly, geophysicist W. Jason Morgan proposed the mantle plume hypothesis. Morgan argued that narrow, buoyant columns of hot mantle rock rise from the core-mantle boundary, remaining stationary relative to the moving plates. As a plate drifts over a plume, the thermal upwelling melts the lithospheric base, forming a linear track of active volcanoes. While Morgan's theory initially achieved wide consensus , it has recently faced robust skepticism. Skeptics argue that intraplate volcanism is not driven by deep plumes but is instead a consequence of shallow lithospheric extension. According to this alternative view, tensile stresses within a plate create structural fractures that propagate downward, allowing shallow asthenospheric melt to escape to the surface. This shallow fracture model suggests that hotspot volcanism is a passive reaction to plate motion rather than an active driver from the deep Earth, presenting a refutation of the deep-seated plume hypothesis. Resolving this debate remains a major conundrum in earth science, as direct seismic imaging of thin plume conduits remains at the limit of current technology.
