1. The Strategic Mandate
The VARC section has evolved from a vocabulary test to a rigorous measure of critical reasoning. RC accounts for 16 out of 24 questions, making it the cornerstone of your percentile.
The Goal
You must transition from a reader who "finds information" to an analyst who "evaluates logic." Success requires navigating dense, abstract discourse under pressure.
2. Thematic Landscape
CAT passages are carefully curated from high-quality academic sources. Expect to see these recurring themes:
Philosophy & Classics
Stoicism, Intellectual History, Ethics. (e.g. CAT 2022)
Social Sciences
Sociology, Anthropology, Urban History. (e.g. CAT 2022)
Ecology & Science
Narrative science, history of species. (e.g. CAT 2023)
Tech & Society
Impact of tech on culture/commerce. (e.g. CAT 2024)
3. Question Taxonomy
Synthesis
Identify the central thesis or primary objective. Options often trap you with 'Too Narrow' summaries.
4. The Art of Elimination (Distractors)
- Too Broad: Uses 'All/Always' when text says 'Some/Often'.
- Too Narrow: Focuses on a minor detail, ignoring the main argument.
- Out of Scope: Introduces external concepts not in the text.
- Factually Distorted: Uses keywords from the passage but twists the relationship.
